How to Search Civil Dockets
No public county trial-docket search was verified for Humphreys County. Circuit civil records begin with the Circuit Court Clerk. Chancery matters begin with the Clerk & Master. Probate requires a separate check because the 23rd Judicial District local rules place Humphreys probate with the County Clerk under a special private act. Give the office a case number or party style, filing year, category, and exact document sought.
Verified channels include the clerk’s counter, courthouse inspection, phone, and a written request. The Clerk & Master directory also lists an email, though research did not confirm that email requests are accepted. Tennessee Public Case History applies only after an appeal. A local public terminal, document images, fax, dropbox, bulk export, fee card, and fixed response time were not verified.
- Choose Circuit, Chancery, or the probate route.
- Provide the case number, party style, year, and category.
- Ask for the public docket or register first.
- Name the pleading, return, order, or judgment needed.
- Confirm the copy type, cost, and accepted delivery route.

The office split is the key local fact. Circuit civil includes damages or torts, contract or debt matters, general civil cases, judicial hospitalization, and some appeals. Chancery’s published list spans domestic relations, parenting and child support, orders of protection, real estate, tax disputes, injunctions, guardianship, contract matters, and other equitable work.

For probate, call the County Clerk at 931-296-7671 and cross-check the Clerk & Master when custody is unclear. Keep a written referral if one office sends the request to another. A title such as “property” or “family” alone may not identify the right custodian.
What a Civil Docket Shows
A civil docket usually identifies the caption, court, division, case number, filing date, case type, parties and roles, counsel, and a chronological series of entries. Entries can include a complaint or petition, summons and return, answer, counterclaim, motion, response, notice, continuance, hearing, order, judgment, transfer, appeal, payment, or satisfaction. The register is an index. It may not contain the document text.
| Case number | The local identifier; an AOC statistical example is 43CC12021CV10436, not a promise of one format. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Plaintiff or petitioner and defendant or respondent, subject to redaction. |
| Filings | Pleadings, service entries, motions, responses, and filed orders. |
| Settings | Hearing date, proceeding type, division, judge, and status. |
| Judgment | The signed result, followed by any amended order or appeal. |
Humphreys Civil Filing Snapshot
The FY2023-24 Chancery report counted 446 Humphreys filings. Probate or trust was the largest row at 134. Residential parenting or child support followed at 112, with 64 orders of protection, 45 divorces without minor children, and 40 divorces with minor children. The FY2024-25 Circuit report counted 37 civil filings, including 24 damages or tort matters.
These official totals describe categories and periods, not parties or outcomes. The pending count came from a September 30, 2024 snapshot. It included 391 Chancery and 193 Circuit civil cases. Age buckets are not a forecast of how long one Humphreys County matter will take.
Types of Civil Cases on the Docket
Civil labels help route a request, but the local court matters as much as the subject. A damages claim can appear in Circuit or Chancery reporting. Property-related work may involve Chancery, yet a deed or tax record may belong to another county office. Family and protection matters can contain a public register while specific attachments stay protected.
- Contract, debt, and specific-performance claims.
- Damages and tort matters reported in both court groups.
- Real estate, property, tax, and injunction matters.
- Divorce, parenting, support, and protection cases.
- Probate, trust, guardianship, and conservatorship matters.
Humphreys Probate Cross-Check
Probate is a local routing exception. The 23rd Judicial District rules say Humphreys probate is handled by the County Clerk under a special private act, while the Clerk & Master page lists probate and small-estate work among Chancery matters. A requester should not assume that one reference cancels the other. Ask each office where the specific year and record type are held.
Best request: Give the estate style, approximate year, known number, and document name. Ask whether the public docket, inventory, order, or certified copy is held by the County Clerk, Clerk & Master, or both.
The official reports reinforce the need to check. Probate or trust was the largest Chancery filing row in FY2023-24, yet the statistical table is not a public list of estates. Only the custodian can match a case-level request to the live index or older file.
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
A setting is a scheduled event, not always a trial. The docket may list a motion hearing, status event, conference, nonjury hearing, or trial date. Compare the setting date with the clerk-entry date. They can differ. A continuance or reset means the date moved; it does not show that the claim ended. The reason may appear only in a separate order.
Before relying on a setting, confirm the court, division, date, time, proceeding type, judge, and status with the proper Humphreys office. Check for later entries, corrected dates, and amended orders. The county public-notice calendar is not a court case calendar. When a date changes, the current register and signed scheduling order are stronger evidence than an old notice.
Read Humphreys Civil Outcomes
Chancery reported 354 dispositions in FY2023-24. Its manner rows included 89 nonjury trials, 82 dismissals, 59 compromises or settlements without hearing, 51 court-approved settlements, 26 uncontested or default results, 22 withdrawals, two transfers, and no jury trials. Circuit civil reported 32 dispositions in FY2024-25, including 17 compromises or settlements without hearing.
- Default
- A result recorded without a contested response; read the judgment for its exact basis and terms.
- Dismissal
- An end to some or all claims that may be voluntary, involuntary, or tied to another order.
- Settlement
- A reported resolution category; the agreement or amount may not be public.
- Final order
- The signed record that states the operative ruling and may later be amended or appealed.
A disposition row never tells the whole case story. To confirm a ruling, request the signed order. To confirm service, request the summons and return. To confirm a settlement, ask what filed order is public. To confirm an appeal, request the notice and search the appellate number in PCH.
Public Access to Civil Dockets
Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 34 governs access to public court records subject to lawful limits. A public docket heading may remain available even if a family, medical, minor, financial, adoption, guardianship, or protection attachment is withheld or redacted. Ask for the public portion and the authority for any restriction.
Civil record access: Tennessee Rule of Civil Procedure 1A presumes civil court records open and permits sealing only under its serious or substantial interest and least-restrictive-means standard. Rule 34 and other laws still protect confidential material.
Rule 1A does not make every attachment public. If a file is restricted, ask whether the public docket line, case number, filing date, redacted copy, or sealing order remains available. The official Tennessee Code access page is the proper route to current statutory text before relying on a deadline or exemption.
Older Humphreys civil files may sit in a paper index, archive, or a different office. Ask for the first and last years available in the active system and where earlier records went. The AOC pending-age report is not a retention schedule. A missing online result does not prove a record is sealed, destroyed, or nonexistent.
Humphreys Orders Beat Docket Lines
A short entry such as “order entered” confirms activity but may omit every operative term. A motion line shows that a request was filed, not that it was granted. A hearing line does not reproduce testimony. When the result matters, ask for the signed order or judgment and check for any corrected order, satisfaction, appeal, or later amendment.
The same rule applies to aggregate data. Official civil reports show how many items clerks reported by category and period. They do not identify a case or reveal what its judge decided. Label each source as a docket line, filed document, minute entry, transcript, aggregate report, or clerk statement. That distinction prevents a summary from being mistaken for the actual Humphreys County civil record.
